Assalamualaikum w.b.t. and heloo from the other side! Continuing from the last post; after a few meetings, discussions and brainstorming, we
finally came up with an event called ‘ProjekUMBI1617’. UMBI is the acronym of ‘University
of Malaya BioInfo’ students, where Bioinfo is short for Bioinformatics, the name of our degree
program. Also, ‘umbi’ is a word in Malay which means ‘establish firmly or
deeply’.
Honestly, at first I was really shy/embarrassed to tell the girls
about the name ‘ProjekUMBI1617’ because I myself thought it sounded funny and
somewhat political (in what sense I don’t know, but it does to me). The reason
I came up with the name was because we’ll need to name the project sooner or
later, right? The name of our degree program was already a mouthful too and so there you have it, ‘ProjekUMBI1617’. However, when I brought up the topic, the
girls were really accepting and thought that it was a good idea. (though I’m
pretty sure some of them might’ve giggled/lol-ed at the name).
Like the meaning of the word, we decided we should approach
and interact with children as they are the successors of our country and are
the ones we should nurture for a brighter future. The orphanage that we have
chosen belongs to ‘Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ehsan Ash-Shakur’ aka PEKEAS. The
orphanage consists of 30 students with 14 female students and 16 male students.
We also have agreed on the dates for our event. It was supposed to be on the
1st and 2nd of April but due to unavoidable
complications, we agreed to change it to the 15th and 16th
of April instead. It's okayy as long as the eight of us can do the event together. Countdown: 5 more weeks till 'ProjekUMBI1617'!
p/s: We're looking for volunteers (especially males) to join our event. Anyone interested can PM or DM our social media pages for further details. Thank you in advance and may Allah s.w.t. bless you!
warm regards;
Ain Syahirah.
